The Islami Chhatra Shibir has won a historic and sweeping victory in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election 2025. For the first time, Shibir openly contested with a full panel and secured 23 out of 28 posts in the central committee, including the powerful vice-president (VP) and general secretary (GS) positions.
Md Abu Shadik (Kayem) was elected vice-president with 14,042 votes. He defeated Bangladesh Chhatra Dal’s Abidul Islam Khan, who got 5,708 votes. Independent candidates Shameem Hossen and Umama Fatema followed with 3,883 and 3,389 votes.
Shibir leader SM Farhad became the general secretary with 10,794 votes. His closest rival was Chhatra Dal’s Tanvir Bari Hamim, who received 5,283 votes. Other candidates, including Meghmallar Bosu from Protirodh Parishad, also contested but fell behind.

In the race for assistant general secretary (AGS), Shibir’s Muhammad Mohiuddin Khan won with 11,772 votes, defeating Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed of Chhatra Dal. Independent candidate Tahmid Al Muddassir Chowdhury also got the same 5,064 votes but lost due to tie-breaking rules.
Among the women representatives, Fatema Tasnim Juma was elected Liberation War and Democratic Movements representative with 10,631 votes.
Other Shibir candidates also secured key posts such as Common Room and Cafeteria Secretary, Sports Secretary, Student Transport Secretary, International Affairs Secretary, Health and Environment Secretary, Human Rights and Law Affairs Secretary, Career Development Secretary, and Science and Technology Secretary.
A few posts went to non-Shibir candidates. Jubair Bin Neshari (AB Jubair) won as Social Welfare Secretary, Musaddiq Ali Ibn Muhammad became Literature and Cultural Secretary, and Sanjida Ahmed Tonni was elected Research and Publication Secretary.

This election was also special because it was the first Ducsu poll held under the interim government and the first one without Bangladesh Chhatra League, which was banned from contesting.
Chief Returning Officer Professor Mohammad Jasim Uddin announced the results on Tuesday morning. He said the election was an important step for democracy at Dhaka University. “By not holding elections for so long, we had forgotten many things. Through this election, we have created a model that other universities and colleges can adopt,” he said.
The victory marks Shibir’s strong comeback in campus politics after decades of absence.
