US President Donald Trump has played down talk that he wants to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Speaking to CBS News, Trump said, “I have nothing to say about it. All I can do is stop wars. I don’t want attention. I just want to save lives.”
This is different from his past comments, where he said he deserved the prize for helping end conflicts. In the same interview, Trump said he was working to secure peace between Russia and Ukraine. He also plans to talk with European leaders in Paris about Ukraine. His envoy, Steve Witkoff, is attending the meeting in person.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced on 10 October by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Four US presidents have won before, including Barack Obama. Trump has said in the past,

“They will never give me a Nobel Peace Prize. I deserve it, but they will never give it.” His team has also pushed for him to win. Witkoff even called Trump the “single finest” Nobel candidate in history.
Trump has been nominated by countries like Israel and Pakistan. He also claimed credit for helping reduce tensions between Pakistan and India earlier this year. Trump says he has “ended” six or seven wars, but experts question this. Some of the conflicts were very short, and it is unclear if peace will last.
BBC Verify looked at Trump’s claims and found he did play a role in cooling down some disputes, including ones between Israel and Iran.
