A group of seven Islamist leaders from Bangladesh, led by Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish chief Maulana Mamunul Haque, is visiting Afghanistan at the invitation of the Taliban government.
The delegation reached Kabul on 17 September, according to a press release from Khelafat Majlish. Along with Mamunul Haque, the team includes Hefazat-e-Islam Nayeb-e-Amir Abdul Hamid (Pir of Madhupur), Abdul Awal, Abdul Haque, Habibullah Mahmud Qasemi, Monir Hossain Qasemi, and Mahbubur Rahman.
The visit will last five days. During this time, the Bangladeshi leaders are expected to meet Afghanistan’s chief justice, several ministers, senior scholars, and top Taliban officials. The press release said they will also review the situation of human rights and women’s rights in Afghanistan. These issues have drawn strong criticism from the international community since the Taliban returned to power.
Talks will focus on building stronger ties between Islamic scholars of the two countries. The delegation will also discuss possible cooperation in areas such as trade, healthcare, and education.
In addition, the Bangladeshi team is scheduled to visit earthquake-affected areas of Afghanistan to observe the situation there.
The visit marks a rare high-level meeting between Bangladeshi Islamist leaders and the Taliban, who continue to face global pressure over their governance and restrictions on women.
