The Australian Government has released its Net Zero Plan, showing how the country will move towards net zero emissions in a fair and efficient way.
As part of this, there is a special Agriculture and Land Sector Plan. This plan explains how farming and land use can help reduce emissions while keeping Australian food and fibre strong in global markets. It also highlights benefits for regional communities, including higher farm productivity, better carbon storage, and improved land health.
The plan focuses on four key areas:
- Understanding emissions better – helping businesses and the sector measure and manage their impact.
- Encouraging innovation – supporting new technologies and solutions that reduce emissions.
- Strengthening on-ground action – backing farmers and land managers to act.
- Using land to support net zero – enhancing the role of soil, forests, and nature in capturing carbon.
The government is already investing heavily to make this happen, including:
- $60.8 million for emissions reduction efforts in agriculture and land.
- $87 million to set up the Zero Net Emissions Agriculture Cooperative Research Centre.
- $1 billion more for the Regional Investment Corporation, offering loans to farmers to improve climate resilience, increase productivity, and support net zero efforts.
Through this plan, Australia aims to ensure that its farmers remain world leaders in low-emissions, sustainable agriculture while helping the nation meet its climate goals.
