A cyberattack on a company that provides check-in and boarding systems has caused problems at several big airports in Europe, leading to many flight delays and cancellations, Xinhua reported.
Heathrow Airport in London, the biggest international airport in the UK, said on Saturday morning that a “technical issue” hit the company that runs check-in and boarding systems for several airlines.
“A third-party supplier that provides check-in and boarding systems for many airlines at different airports is having a technical problem, which may delay departing passengers,” a Heathrow spokesperson told local media.
Airports in Brussels and Berlin were also affected.
Brussels Airport said the attack happened Friday night and forced staff to use manual check-in and boarding while the service provider works to fix the issue.
The problem caused long delays and many flight cancellations on Saturday. According to the flight-tracking site Flightradar24, about 91% of flights at Brussels Airport were delayed on Saturday morning, with an average delay of 51 minutes.
Germany’s Berlin Brandenburg Airport said it was also affected and warned passengers to expect longer waiting times for check-in and boarding.
