Mohammed Shahabuddin, the 22nd President of Bangladesh, has officially resigned from his post, citing severe physical health complications. His resignation letter was submitted to the Speaker of the National Parliament, Jatiya Sangsad, who has stepped in as the Acting President in accordance with the Constitution of Bangladesh.
Interim Leadership: Under Article 54 of the Constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has assumed the responsibilities of the President on an interim basis following the vacancy.
Reasons for Resignation: In his official resignation letter, the 76-year-old outgoing President cited medical conditions including severe autonomic neuropathy, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney complications, stating that he is physically unable to carry out the demanding duties of the office.
Constitutional Timeline: The Speaker announced that, as mandated by the constitution, the process to elect a new President will be completed within the next 90 days.
Background: President Shahabuddin assumed office in April 2023 for a five-year term that was originally set to end in April 2028.
