8th anniversary of the Road Safety Movement celebrated: 9-point demands presented and call to remain united against fascism.
On the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the historic 2018 Road Safety Movement, the ‘Road Safety Movement’ organized a discussion meeting and cultural program at the ‘Kabi Sufia Kamal Auditorium’ of the National Museum in Shahbagh, Dhaka, today, July 29 (Wednesday).
The organization raised a ‘9-point proposal’ to ensure safe roads at the event. State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Haque Nur was present as the chief guest at the event. In addition, MP Sultana Jasmine Jui, BRTA Chairman Md. Habibur Rahman, Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Sara Hossain, internationally renowned photographer Shahidul Alam and actress Kazi Nowshaba Ahmed spoke as invited guests.
Chaired by the organization’s president Abdullah Mehdi Deepto and moderated by General Secretary Inzamul Haque, the then agitating students shared their firsthand experiences of the repression and torture by the Chhatra League-Jube League and the then government during the 2018 movement.
Mahiuddin Abdullah, founder and director of Peace News and US IT Academy, delivered an emotional speech at the event. Recalling the 2018 movement, he said, “As university students, we took to the streets that day, holding placards reading ‘This is not a political movement…’ demanding safe roads, good governance and justice. But the then fascist government brutally suppressed the just movement of the students with its thugs.”
He further said, “It is not enough to just make the roads safe; the entire country’s governance system must be freed from tyranny and hegemony and a just society must be formed. Even if tyranny has been removed from the roads, the path to justice is still a long way off.” In his speech, he warned against the rise of any new fascist force and said, “The conscious people of Bangladesh will not tolerate any more misrule. As long as there is a drop of blood in their bodies, our struggle will continue for the trial of the murder of martyr Osman Hadi, the implementation of the July Charter and the referendum verdict, and the establishment of a just state.
