India and Pakistan are both testing new missiles, but experts say India’s latest test is more about China than Pakistan. India recently tested the Agni-V, a powerful missile that can travel 5,000km and carry nuclear weapons. This missile can reach most of Asia, including important parts of China.
The test came just before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. Even though India and China are trying to improve relations, India still sees China as its biggest threat. Experts believe Agni-V was meant to show China that India is ready if needed.

India already has an advantage over Pakistan. During a recent conflict, India used its fast BrahMos cruise missiles to strike Pakistani targets. Pakistan’s new Army Rocket Force Command (ARFC) is meant to protect against such attacks. Pakistan also has missiles like the Shaheen-III and Ababeel, but they do not have the same long range as India’s Agni series.
India is working on an even stronger missile, the Agni-VI, which could reach more than 10,000km and carry many nuclear warheads at once. India is also building nuclear submarines that can launch missiles, making its arsenal much stronger. Pakistan, by contrast, has no nuclear submarines and fewer long-range options.
The United States and Western countries are less worried about India’s missiles because they see India as a partner in Asia against China. In fact, the US has supported India’s rise by helping with nuclear deals. Pakistan’s programme, however, has faced more criticism, as some US officials worry it could grow into a threat beyond South Asia.
In short, Pakistan builds missiles mostly to counter India, while India builds them with China — and global power — in mind.
